The Pyramids Watch as Squash Meets History

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) found that no purpose-built arena could rival the stage offered by the Giza. When history itself can take part in sport, the pyramids become more than a backdrop; they become a silent witness. That is why, year after year, the PSA has chosen to place its glass-walled court beneath the shadow of monuments older than sport itself, allowing squash to be played where civilization once began.

Here, players do not enter a traditional venue. They step onto sand shaped by centuries, into a court framed by stone that has outlived empires. Every rally unfolds under the watch of the Great Pyramid, turning the match into a rare encounter between human motion and ancient permanence. The speed of the ball contrasts sharply with the stillness of the pyramids, creating a scene where modern athleticism borrows gravity from history.

Robert Hendrick, PSA Operations Director, explains the reasoning behind the choice, stating that “Staging squash at the pyramids represents the very best of what squash can be when sport meets story. The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most iconic and historic venues we have ever used, not just in squash, but in global sport. Competing beneath thousands of years of human history elevates the performance, the emotion, and the global attention the sport receives.”

Hendrick emphasizes that the choice is not merely aesthetic. “Squash deserves aspirational stages. We want the sport to be seen in locations that resonate globally. The pyramids send a powerful message that squash has depth, history, and the ability to stand alongside the world’s most recognizable landmarks while still respecting their significance.”

The impact of this decision, Hendrick adds, extends far beyond the courts, stating that “Images from Giza travel instantly around the world, reaching audiences far beyond traditional squash fans. People who may never have watched a match before stop and pay attention. That visibility helps grow the sport, attract new fans, and reinforce squash’s place on the international sporting stage.”

The significance of the tournament resonates at the national level as well. H.E. Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, praised champions Mostafa Asal and Hania El Hammamy during the closing ceremony of the 2025 edition saying, “Their victories highlight Egypt’s unrivaled dominance in squash worldwide, reflecting the steadfast support of the state and its leadership for sports and athletes.” Such endorsements elevate the event beyond mere competition, transforming it into a showcase of national pride and cultural diplomacy.

Amr El Ganainy, Deputy CEO and Executive Board Member of CIB Egypt, described the competition as “a landmark in the global sports calendar… reflecting Egypt’s leadership in this game and showcasing the country’s civilizational image to the world.”

Amr Mansi, Founder and CEO of iEvents, added that returning the finals stage to the pyramids “provides not just an iconic backdrop, but a holistic experience that fuses sport with Egypt’s heritage.”

Hendrick also reflects on the player experience: “Athletes tell us it is unforgettable. You are not just playing for ranking points; you are performing on a stage watched by the world, surrounded by history. That kind of environment brings out something special in elite athletes.”

Ultimately, the squash court at the pyramids is more than a venue, it is a symbol. “It shows that squash is confident in its identity, proud of its traditions, and ready to engage the world on the grandest stages,” Hendrick says.

Beneath the silent gaze of the pyramids, the sport becomes part of a wider cultural narrative, highlighting Egypt’s champions, heritage, and global presence to millions worldwide.
