From Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean: Can the Nile Become Africa’s New Trade Route?

As African countries continue seeking new ways to strengthen trade and improve regional integration, the idea of creating a navigation route linking Lake Victoria in East Africa to the Mediterranean Sea has returned as one of the continent’s most ambitious infrastructure proposals.
The proposed Lake Victoria-Mediterranean Navigation Link would connect landlocked countries in the Nile Basin to seaports through a series of waterways, canals, ports, and navigation facilities. Supporters believe the project could reduce transport costs, improve access to global markets, and strengthen trade links between East Africa, Egypt, Europe, and the Middle East.
Dr. El-Shamy said the project should not be viewed only as a navigation system, but as a wider continental development initiative linking the Nile Basin to Egyptian ports on the Mediterranean. He explained that such a route could give landlocked African countries a lower-cost path to global markets, while also strengthening Egypt’s position as a trade hub connecting Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
For decades, many African countries have struggled with high transport costs, weak logistics networks, and limited intra-African trade. According to El-Shamy, if the proposed waterway is developed, it could change how goods are transported from agricultural, industrial, and mineral-rich areas in East and Central Africa to international markets.
El-Shamy added that river transport could offer major economic advantages, especially for moving heavy goods and raw materials over long distances. Compared with road transport, he said water transport usually consumes less fuel, requires lower maintenance costs, and can carry larger volumes of goods at one time.
However, turning the project into reality would not be easy. Dr. Hassan El-Mahdy, a professor at Ain Shams University, said the proposal faces major engineering challenges before it can move forward. He explained that differences in elevation along the route, as well as slopes near rivers and streams, would require complex engineering solutions.
“It is evident from our research that because of water elevation variations throughout the length of the proposed route and because of the existence of slopes on either side of rivers or streams, there will have to be engineering solutions developed,” El-Mahdy said.
According to El-Mahdy, the route would require the construction of lift stations and other infrastructure to deal with these elevation differences. This would increase both the technical complexity and the cost of the project.
Despite these challenges, El-Mahdy believes Egypt’s experience with major national infrastructure projects over the past decade could provide an important knowledge base. He said this experience may help Egypt support neighboring African countries in developing transport projects that serve regional trade and development.
Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamid, a marine transport engineer, said another major challenge lies in coordination among the countries involved. He explained that the project would require not only construction work, but also agreement on technical standards, regulations, and engineering specifications.
“The challenge isn’t just building,” Abdel Hamid said. “It’s the need to align technical standards, regulations, and engineering specifications among countries with different levels of infrastructure development.”
Abdel Hamid added that the project would require upgrading ports, roads, bridges, and navigation systems to suit the different environments along the route. He said detailed geological and topographic studies must also be conducted before implementation to ensure the project is safe and practical.
Environmental concerns also remain an important part of the debate. While experts recognize the need to protect ecosystems and water resources along the route, El-Mahdy said engineering challenges are currently at the center of the discussion. Still, specialists stress that detailed environmental impact assessments would be essential before any major construction begins.
